Astronomy and Navigation in Gilleleje

Gilleleje, 6thSeptember 2021

Dear Alexandra Hayles,

I am sure the first people to take interest in astronomy must have been sailors, using the sun and stars to try to find their route across the oceans.

Gilleleje Sailing Club conducts courses in Yachtskipper and one of the subjects is astronomical navigation. Despite GPS navigation, sailors are fascinated by the ancient art of using a sextant, many still want to learn navigation by the old methods and this requires learning a little about the sky with the sun, planets and the thousands of stars that surround us.

We are fortunate that in Tisvilde we have the magnificentWieth-Knudsen observatory and the observatory's director Michael Quaade has agreed to give Gilleleje sailors an insight into the world's oldest science, "Astronomy". Within this meeting there will hopefully be an opportunity for practical exercises.

The lecture will be heldon Thursday,7th October 2021 at Gilleleje Sailing Club from 19:00 hrs to 22:00 hrs. Interested parties can register for the event by sending an email to hans@sail2learn.dk. Alternatively, call on 5376 6238.

Michael Quaadewill speak on the following topics:
• Recognition and Technology
• Gravity
• Big Bang and stellar motion
• Galaxies, the Milky Way and our nearest neighbours
• The Dark Universe
• Black holes
• The sun and stellar models
• The origin of elements
• Is there life or sentient beings elsewhere?

Michael Quaade starts the lecture at 19:00 followed by a break at 20:00 with a sandwich and coffee, continue from 20:20 and plan to finish around 21:20 -After the meeting we hope there will be an opportunity for some practical exercises on astronomical binoculars with Michael with Michael’s guidance.

The commander of Fredriksten tells about what happened at the fortress when Charles XII in 1718 made a new attempt to conquer Norway. Karl XII brought an army of a total of 40,000 men, but during the siege of Fredriksten Fortress in Halden he was shot on 11 December 1718. At 18:00 there will be an Allsang on the border and the evening ends with a dinner in the King's Hall at Fredriksten Fortress.

Let’s meet up!
