Yacht skipper Y1

Purpose:

If you are an ambitious sailor and want to be responsible for large ships on the world seas, you must be certified by the Maritime Service as Yachtskipper of the first degree. If you want to develop your knowledge of navigation and everything that matters in order to plan and implement a safe navigation, the yachtskipper course gives a lot of knowledge.

Gilleleen Sector School is organising Yachtskipper courses for sailors who are withstanding and would like to increase their competences and as well as we have it documented through the highest certification for leisure courses “Yachtskipper first grade”. The Maritime Agency is responsible for the Yachtskipper training which is carried out with Dansk Sejlunion and Gilleleje Sejlklub.

Contents:

The training is designed so that courses can keep up with a busy everyday life. All material and tasks are placed on the network and to facilitate communication, we use the DropBox network. The teaching consists of 16 lessons, where the individual chapters of the curriculum are examined and subsequently placed a number of tasks which are carried out and examined within each subject. The course follows the training plan of the Maritime Service and includes education on the following topics;

Technical Navigation:

Radar, compasses and autopilot, log and echo, satellite navigation systems, electronic charts, sextant and modern technical navigation instruments.

2. Sailing Planning, Tides and Astronomical Navigation:

Legislation on navigation planning, practical and theoretical determination of tidal, astronomical navigation with sextant, Azimut and amplitude, and the world space and star sky, star images of planets and use of nautical almanacs.

Meteorology:

Basic concepts, observations, organisations and services, temperate & tropical cyclones, weather cards, sea flows, ice cream, wave formation, weather phenomena and indicators.

Nautical Almanacs & Azimuth Tables:

The use and notices in different almanacs and the use of Azimut tables.

5. Sail plan:

In the course, a navigation plan for an ocean-going navigation is drawn up, for example, from Gilleleje to the Caribbean. The sail plan shall be drawn up for a concrete well documented ship where stability curves, design data and operational data are known.

The work on sailing plans is a major part of the course and the sailing plan is usually a document of 60-70 pages.

6.Extended first aid:

The course contains an extended first-aid course which enables the trainee to treat injured and sick crew members, if possible, in consultation with doctors. The courses receive a certificate for the course carried out.

Examination:

To be set for the graduation in Yachtskipper of the First degree, it is a prerequisite that you are Yachtskipper of the third degree. For those who want the Yachtskipper degree, the course will be completed by a degree of examination which will be held on Saturday 1 June 2019 in Gillelejene Sail Club.

Travellers who are scheduled for the first degree in Yachtskipper shall draw up a sailing plan for a navigation where one of the world seas is crossed. The task is normally carried out by groups of two or three trainees and the sailing plan is based on a specific ship, where all data are available for stability and construction and operating data. The sailing plan shall be submitted prior to the examination to the Maritime Service which shall review the material and the course shall, on the day of examination, explain each chapter and section and defend the sailing plan./p>

A censor is responsible for the interview of the course and the course list must be able to explain the subjects and techniques contained in the overall Yachtskipper training.

Result:

You will achieve the degree of Yachtskipper of the first degree, which gives the right to carry a Danish ship over 15 metres and up to 24 metres in all the world seas, provided that you are looking for a first degree of Society as Yachtskipper. This requires, however, that you have at least six months of documented sailing time and the sea time must be on a ship requiring a third degree Yachtskipper under the rules of the Maritime Service.

Lessons and price:

The course contains 16 lessons plus two days special examination preparations. The course starts Monday, 22 October and all lessons are being taken on Mondays at Gilleleje Sail Club from 7:10 to 10:00. The special examination lessons are agreed subsequently. The price for the course including coffee, bread, cheese and jam is 1,000 kr. and the participants have to be a member of the Gilleleje Sail Club and have passed Y3.
